Only God can transform a shepherd into the most powerful man in the world. The life story of the patriarch, Joseph, provides us with incredible insight into the lifelong process of discipleship. Ultimately, God’s victory was incredibly sweet. However, through the journey the man of purpose had long seasons of hardship. It was the finished product that was incredible.

Joseph was the first child of Jacob’s most beloved wife, Rachel. There were several older siblings born of Jacob’s other wives. Clearly, Joseph was his father’s favorite. His brothers despised his prominence. Their jealousy provided the perfect crucible for God’s refinement. Through study of the life of Joseph, we will discover much about human nature, leadership, and God’s faithfulness.

Then God remembered Rachel; he listened to her and opened her womb. She became pregnant and gave birth to a son and said, “God has taken away my disgrace.” (Genesis 30:22-23, NIV)

Waiting upon the Lord is a recurring theme throughout the life of Joseph. It was years before his mother became pregnant. Perhaps this was God’s method of introduction. The patriarch enduringly trusted in the Father’s will.

It is my prayer that you will allow God to lead you on through the adventure of life, that His word will aid in your understanding of spiritual maturity, and that you will see life’s happenings – as Joseph eventually did – from a perspective of development rather than chaotic circumstances. Remember discomfort and suffering are common to humanity; yet, for the Christian, they are powerful tools in the hands of the Almighty.

Trust Him as He leads you on…

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own under-standing; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. (Proverbs 3:5-6, NIV)
