The Wooden Angel in Beaver is one of the most popular restaurants in Beaver County. It’s been that way for longer than I’ve been alive.
Beaver County residents know the Wooden Angel as THE place for celebrating special occasions. Their incredible wine selection and fantastic private rooms are also well known throughout our community.
This is the restaurant that has set the standard for dining in Beaver County for nearly five decades, so when I was offered the opportunity to sit down with owner Alex Sebastian, I literally could not contain my excitement.
While our conversation did eventually work its way through to the topics you would expect like their famous wine cellar and private rooms, that wasn’t the biggest takeaway for me…
The Wooden Angel’s Best Kept Secret
Insider Tip: They are open for lunch.
As I’ve said in a few previous articles, I find myself eating out for lunch quite often.
Because of my work schedule, I am not usually available to go out to dinner. Since I still love to eat at local restaurants, I frequently head out for lunch.
It just so happens that my lunch schedule worked with Alex, so our meeting for this article was scheduled during lunch…and it was fabulous.
I’m not sure why it never occurred to me that the Wooden Angel should be in my regular rotation for lunch. But that is going to change immediately.
Not only was my lunch delicious, I also didn’t feel underdressed. I’m a very casual person, so this is sometimes an issue for me. But not at the Wooden Angel.
The combination of a casual (but still classy) atmosphere located right in Beaver makes this a perfect place for meeting with clients. Their 12-person board room is now going to be the official home of future Your Beaver County lunch meetings.
Not only was the food delicious, but it was reasonably priced as well!
My steak salad was only $15. Compared to some of the $10 salads I’ve had in local bars and restaurants, the extra $5 for the quality of both the food and the atmosphere at the Angel is a crazy bargain.
On top of great food, reasonable prices, and a casual atmosphere, the Wooden Angel also offers one more perk: PARKING!
Getting a spot in downtown Beaver around lunchtime can be stressful even on a light day, so the fact that you can always pull right into a spot at the Wooden Angel is a huge bonus if you’re in a hurry!
The Private Rooms
If you are looking for a great place to host a large group, the Wooden Angel is perfect for that too! They have a party room that can seat up to 60 people, and their awesome wine cellar room can seat up to 48 people.
My sister and her husband actually had their rehearsal dinner in the wine cellar room and we were all very impressed with the food and service.
Alex explained to me that the Wine Cellar room was actually their second wine cellar.
The first wine cellar is located on the left as you pass the hostess station and head down into the main restaurant. He told me that they outgrew that original wine cellar the day that they opened.
They are now on their third wine cellar, which is a scaled down version of the second wine cellar.
The Wine Selection
I’m not a wine expert, and much of what he said was lost on me, but listening to Alex talk about some of the different bottles as he showed me through his wine cellar was like having the chance to watch an artist at work.
This guy has an amazing amount of knowledge about wine.
Rumor has it that, on occasion, he will send one of his employees into the wine cellar with instructions to grab any six random bottles off the shelves. He will then proceed to identify each bottle by taste alone without ever looking at them.
As we walked into the wine cellar, I asked Alex what was the most expensive bottle of wine. He laughed, told me that everyone asks that question, and then proceeded to point out one thousand dollar bottle after another.
My followup question got an even bigger laugh. Somewhere in between him telling me about different types of grapes from different vineyards in California, I asked him about food and wine pairings. His response was classic:
I think that if you order the food you want to eat, and the wine you want to drink, they will go good together. I hate food and wine pairings.”
The Angel Never Disappoints
If you are looking for a great place to host a private dinner, celebrate a special occasion, or just to have a great lunch, the Wooden Angel is definitely a place that should be at the top of your list.
You Beaver County contributor David James sums it up nicely with his family’s take on the Wooden Angel:
Due to our busy schedules and small child, when the Mrs and I have an opportunity to go out to eat we want it to be special. More times than not we end up at our “first love,” the Wooden Angel. Not because it is close to home, but because whatever the special occasion, even if it is just lunch, the Angel never disappoints. Never.”
Don’t be surprised if you spot me eating lunch here more regularly. I’m thinking I need to work on learning a little something about wine and there is no better place to start!
The Wooden Angel is located at the corner of Sharon Road and Leopard Lane in Beaver. They are open for lunch Tuesday through Friday and for dinner Tuesday through Saturday.
