Bocktown Monaca

Is it me or are the winters getting longer and colder? Seriously. The calendar may stay the same, but it feels like it was below freezing for a year straight. Ugh.

This is the best time of year. Finally, FINALLY, getting that cold air out and some warmer air in. The birds are chirping, the grass is starting to grow… It’s SPRING and I don’t know about you, but Mr. Beaverhausen and I crave the fresh air and sun of the outdoors! We also crave Saturday lunches out.

Last year when I wasn’t pregnant, Saturday lunches included occasionally getting a sitter (and sometimes not), and having a lovely lunch in the lovely sun on a lovely Spring Saturday afternoon. It. Was. Lovely.

There are a few go-to places for outdoor awesomeness in the County that I would like to share. In no particular order….

Barney’s Bar and Grille, Aliquippa

Off of the Aliquippa exit on 376 (It will always be 60 to me) about a mile up the road, sits Barney’s Bar and Grille. The outdoor area is fantastic! There are tables with umbrellas for the sunny afternoons, and fire pits for the cooler evenings. Music pipes through creating an amazingly relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere!

Check the menu for an appetizer called Dar’s Pepperoni Balls. These come baked or fried, and both are great. Every single time we are there, we get these balls. I don’t know who this Dar is, but she sure can cook! Also on the menu: Cabbage and noodles! A tough find for a staple side dish. The restaurant is kid friendly, and the Beaverhausen kids love it. Win-win!

1810 Tavern, Bridgewater

While the outside seating area of 1810 isn’t visible from the street, tucked behind the bar is the door leading to the fresh air. Shady tree lined tables with cloth tablecloths and a nice breeze make the area the perfect spot for an afternoon date!

Oh, and they have the best darn Moscow Mule in the County. There’s something about those copper mugs that just make a warm afternoon better. The food is great, and the menu is seasonal. When we were there, we had the potsticker appetizer and we both loved it.

Zooky’s, Fallston

Mr. Beaverhausen is a sports guy. He will watch whatever sport is in season with the fever and intensity of a #1 fan. I love him for it, but at the same time I also hate all sports on TV…. so therein lies the problem. Enter Zooky’s.

While it is a sports bar, there is so much more to keep the non-sports fan entertained as well. We get the best of both worlds. Whatever boring sport is on TV for him, and the outside breeze, delicious wings, and ice cold beer to keep me company.

Bonus marks for the outside area having a roof. Even on a rainy afternoon, you can still enjoy a Spring breeze. Another check mark in the win category!

Zookys Wings

Kelly’s Riverside Saloon, Bridgewater

What do you get when you cross an Irish Pub and a Caribbean Island? You get Kelly’s Riverside!

If you live in Beaver County, love the outdoors, and haven’t been to Kelly’s outdoor paradise, there might be a problem. They bring in palm trees and sand! It is legitimately like an island back there!!

During a long lunch, you sort of forget that you are on the Beaver River and are escorted to a tropical island. Only on this island, they serve Harp on draught and Guinness Stew. Such a cool spot and a fantastic mesh of cultures.

Hollywood Gardens, Rochester

In my youth, my parents would take me to The Hollywood on Friday evenings for fish sandwiches. It was the epitome of dive bar. Fake ferns, a mural of dogs playing poker, and no windows…and you should have seen the holiday decorations! I don’t know if that much tinsel garland is actually legal in Pennsylvania!  I suppose all of those childhood memories make Hollywood Gardens even better for me now.

While the bar has been updated, the dog mural and Richard Nixon photograph still hang as a reminder of what was. They still make a great fish but now they have an equally as delicious macaroni and cheese to add to the side.

The outside is a small and private area that has tables and music, but the ambiance isn’t the main catch. The beer list and cheese plate bring us back time and time again. Might I recommend the Irish Porter Cheddar and Roasted Tomatoes on your Cheese Platter? You will not regret it! Actually, might I just tag along with you when you go!

Bocktown Beer & Grill, Center Twp.

Bocktown Beer & Grill is a great bar/restaurant located within the Beaver Valley Mall. Locally sourced food, awesome craft beer… it really can’t get much better than that. But, alas! It does!

They have a Saturday Afternoon Acoustic Showcase. That is afternoon LIVE music! Now that is rare and really, really awesome for people with kids: ie. Those that in no way, shape or form could make it until 10pm for a live show to start. Maybe that’s just us?? The music pipes through to the outside area, which much like Zooky’s is an all-weather outdoor area.

Kids are welcomed and because the music is live, the kid noises are successfully drowned out. Was that a toddler screaming or the bands #1 fan? Nobody knows!!  Yeessssssssssss!!

Again, those are just a few that we love. It is very possible to manage such an amazing place at your home too with the help of qualified deck builders. Do you have any spot like those that you love?? I would love to hear them!
