stop-drop-run-5k

Back before I got old and lazy, I used to love to participate in all of the local 5k races throughout Beaver County. It seems like you can catch a 5k just about every Saturday morning in downtown Beaver, and I used to love trading a quick 3 miles (wearing a headband like Lebron) for yet another race t-shirt.

Up in Monaca Heights, those 5k races are a little less frequent, but one in particular is as popular as any race in Beaver County. That race is the Monaca #4 Volunteer Fire Department’s Stop, Drop & Run 5k.

Stop, Drop & Run 5k

This year will be the third edition of the annual Stop, Drop & Run 5k, and it is scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 10 at 9 am.

Last year was a huge success for the race as they had over 200 participants. And this year’s race will be following the same route, but things are going to get a whole lot more interesting!

The Obstacle Course

In addition to the standard 5k race and walk, the new addition to the Stop, Drop & Run 5k this year will be an obstacle course version of the race.

Participants who choose to compete in this obstacle course version will be diverted from the traditional route 10-12 times during the course to complete various firefighter themed obstacles. These obstacles will include things like carrying a sandbag, pulling  a fire hose, dumpster diving, and even putting out a live fire.

This type of obstacle course is definitely a first for Beaver County, and if you are tired of competing in the same old traditional 5k races, this is definitely something you’ll want to check out.

Registration

So why am I already talking about a race that is still more than a month away? Duh. Because I’m trying to save you ten bucks!

You can register for the Stop, Drop & Run 5k anytime you like leading up to race day right from the race website, but if you sign up before September 25, the obstacle course is $10 cheaper!

Up until September 25, the entry fee for the standard 5k is $20 and the entry fee for the obstacle course is $30. But after September 25, those prices go up to $25 and $40. So get registered early!

The Team YBC Kicker

Alright. So this is where it gets interesting.

Team YBC has been kicking around the idea of participating in the Stop, Drop & Run 5k. But we’re also old and lazy and looking for excuses.

So we’ll lay it out like this: If enough people challenge any or all of us to compete in the 5k or obstacle course, we will agree to show up and embarrass ourselves. But you have to be there too. Deal?

All you have to do to call us out is leave a comment on Facebook or mention us on Twitter (might I suggest @bcBeaverhausen, @marcgrando, or @mauramendo). Or just leave a comment at the bottom of this article.

(Be very cautious about challenging our new girl, Ella Parker….you’ll find out why that is on Saturday.)
