Madam Mozzell

I’ve always been fascinated with the stories of people who leave the safety and security of their corporate jobs in order to pursue the dream of owning their own business. It takes a serious amount of guts, passion, and commitment to head out on your own and start something brand new, especially when you are forced to work without a safety net. That entrepreneurial spirit is what makes America great, and Beaver County is full of stories about people who took that leap of faith and started something new.

In case you haven’t noticed, there is a new Beauty Salon located at 2252 Darlington Road in Chippewa. Madam Mozzell Boutique and Salon is the creation of owner Edwina DeVries. As luck would have it, Edwina has one of those “leap of faith” type stories that would inspire just about anyone.

Meet Edwina DeVries

Edwina’s entire career thus far can be summed up in two words: hard work. She started out working midnight shifts at her local Circle K back in high school. At the age of 21, she was running her own store. She continued to take on more and more responsibility until she eventually became the market manager for the entire Pittsburgh area.

Along with all of the responsibility that Edwina took on at Circle K came plenty of stress and ridiculously long hours. Managing multiple stores that are all open 24 hours means you get phone calls at all hours of the day and night. Edwina feared that the stress from her job was going to cause her to get old before her time, so she decided it was time to make a change.

Creating Something Out of Nothing

Once Edwina decided to take the leap and start her own business. It wasn’t long until she decided that it would be a beauty salon, she even found the best place to buy nail salon furniture. She had always wanted to be a hairdresser, inspired by Janet Nicol hairdressing, and was very interested in fashion, jewelry, clothes, and nails. The beauty industry seemed like it would be a perfect fit, and with her management background she knew she could make it work.

Getting her new business off the ground was no easy task. Before she could open the doors of Madam Mozzell, Edwina had to build the entire business, literally. The building was an absolute shell with no floor, no ceiling, and no interior walls. So when you hear Edwina say that everything in the salon is brand new, she seriously means everything!

After surviving all of the headaches and frustration that come with any construction project, Edwina opened the doors of Madam Mozzell Boutique and Salon for the first time on October 22, 2014. She had achieved her goal of creating a salon that could deliver high end services without the high end pricing.

People at the Key to Success

Edwina’s first focus was on bringing in employees who already had an existing clientele and were looking for a beautiful new salon to work out of. Her management experience from Circle K has been a huge help in this area, and most of the people she has hired have been found through mutual friends.

Once she had the right people in place, Edwina then shifted her people skills to focus on the customers. She believes that repeat customers are what will drive the success of her business. Providing her customers with excellent services at reasonable prices while making them feel important and appreciated is Edwina’s strategy to create repeat business.

Services & Products

Madam Mozzell is a full service salon and spa. They offer everything from basic cut and color to advanced styling, manicures, pedicures, facials, and massages. Their facial room has an 8 in 1 machine that uses brushes and suction tools to deliver the highest quality results. They also offer standard Swedish massages, deep tissue massages, and hot stone massages.

The salon also stocks a full line of hair and skin care products. If you are looking for something that they don’t keep in stock already, Edwina will be happy to special order just about anything for you. They also carry a line of costume jewelry that is hand-made in Argentina, and can special order specialty wigs in any style.

One of the more interesting services that Edwina talked about was hosting groups at Madam Mozzell. She talked about birthday parties for little girls where everyone would get “mini facials” and have their nails painted. She also hosts bridal parties for nails and hair before the wedding.

You Have to Always Be There

The thing that really impressed me about Edwina’s story is that she isn’t afraid of putting in the hours. She learned through her experience at Circle K that in order to be successful, you have to work really hard. I noticed that she has brought that same attitude to Madam Mozzell when she talked about being there everyday and knowing each of her customers by name.

It takes a serious amount of courage to leave a safe corporate job and head out on your own. Edwina DeVries has that level of courage, which is exactly what makes Madam Mozzell Boutique and Salon such a great story.

Madam Mozzell currently works based on appointments, you can call them at 724-581-4632 for more information or to schedule an appointment. Edwina was also kind enough to share these great coupons with Your Beaver County readers!
