Snitger's Bike Shop

I love the outdoors and while running is my sport of choice, I really do love a good bike ride. Until recently I only had an older BMX bike to take me around town and while I love the bike, it just wasn’t enough for the hills around my house, so I decided I would find a new geared bicycle to make the rides a little more fun.

I’m a firm believer in shopping local whenever possible so the first stop I made was Snitger’s Bicycle Store on 3rd Street in Beaver. Luckily for me, this was also my last stop, as they had literally everything I needed from the bike to service to even a bike rack for my car. If you’re in the market for a bike, or you have one and need some apparel or accessories, Snitger’s is definitely the place for you.

A Family Business

Snitger’s Bicycle Shop has been in this location since 1976 when it was moved here from across town in Beaver. Originally founded by Jim Snitger in 1950 this bike shop has stayed in the family since then and continues to be run by his daughter Mary and her husband Marlin today. Chances are if you stop in you’ll see at least one of them if not both.

The other friendly face you’ll almost certainly see at the shop is the one and only Duncan, the family dog. He’s the friendliest dog you’ll probably ever meet and really loves new customers.

Snitger’s Bicycle Selection

Unlike some bicycle shops today that focus on a single brand, Snitger’s has a large variety of brands including Specialized, Trek, Electra, and Haro to name a few. There are over 200 different bicycles in the store itself ready for purchase and hundreds others online. There are more than 50 men’s mountain bikes available for special order alone.

Along with a variety of brands, Snitger’s has an assortment of different styles of bicycles as well. You can get a full road bicycle for all smooth pavement riding, a BMX bike for tricks and dirt, a mountain bike for off-road fun, and even some cruiser bikes that are a mix between a road bike, a beach cruiser, and a mountain bike. A new style of bicycles emerging lately is what’s known as the gravel road bike. These are road bikes with beefed up tires better brakes. These are possibly the perfect bike for on and off road riding and Snitger’s carries these, too. Best of all, if the new Fat Bikes are your thing, you can get these chunky-wheeled bikes here as well.

There are skateboards and long boards available as well, if you get your fun on four wheels instead of two. All in all, the selection available in this single building is amazing, and if it wasn’t for the amazingly helpful owners and staff, I may have never found what I was looking for. Thankfully for us, the staff is incredibly knowledgeable and loves to find the perfect bike for every customer. This makes the selection a great thing and after you ride a few in the back of the building you’re bound to find the perfect fit for you.

Apparel and Accessories

Once you get a bicycle picked out, it’s time to find some accessories and get suited up. If it’s been a while since you rode, or if you’re picking up your first bike, you definitely want to get a helmet, a light for your bike, and maybe even a basket or package carrier. Snitger’s not only sells these, but they install them same day as well. That means you can come up to the shop, pick out a bike and all the accessories and get the bike assembled and the accessories installed all in the very same day.

INSIDER TIP: Make sure to ask for text messaging when you’re bike is ready. You’ll get a message as soon as you can go pick it up, no calls required!

Once you have your bike decked out, it’s time to get you some fresh duds. We mentioned helmets, which are vital, but what about a good riding shirt, shorts, and shoes? You can get all of these and more at Snitger’s, and even check out catalogs and order apparel that’s not in stock.

One of the newest features in the shop is an apparel section focused primarily on women and their needs with clothing and accessories when riding. Too often bicycle clothing and accessories are focused around what guys need, which is why Snitger’s is building out a corner of the shop for the women’s boutique.

Beer…At a Bike Shop?

It should be no surprise to anyone that knows me that my favorite part about Snitger’s is the beer. That’s right, there’s a small tap system right in the middle of the shop. Since Beaver’s a dry town, this takes a little bit of explaining.

Marlin and Mary’s son Noah is an avid homebrewer. A little while ago he was set to be married and the reception was to be held at the bike shop. Noah wanted to serve his beer to the guests but didn’t have an effective way of doing this in a semi professional manner, so with some convincing and planning, he was able to procure a small draft and refrigeration system with six taps installed into it. Loaded with beers he made himself, the party was a success and a new fixture in the shop was born.

Today, you can purchase a mini growler that holds 32-ounces from Snitger’s and fill it for free anytime you come in. There are just about always 5 beers on tap and usually 3 of them are Noah’s own creations, which I have to say as a beer guy, are pretty great. You’ll also find a family favorite East End Brewing Big Hop on as well as another commercially available beer that varies.

From bikes to service to beer, Snitger’s is an amazing family-owned and operated business that you really should visit. Before buying a bike anywhere else, make sure you check out Snitger’s first, and no matter where you bought your bike, take it to Snitger’s when it needs fixed.
