Greersburg Academy, located in Darlington, was a college ‘prep’ school. Originally built as a seminary, it was the first academy west of the Allegheny Mountains. The building, or the ‘stone pile’ was built in 1806, making it the oldest public building in Beaver County. The 8-room schoolhouse cost $10 a quarter and $0.75/week for boarding or if you were low on cash, 8 gallons of whiskey would suffice. You’ll be interested to know that Darlington was first known as Greersburg until 1830 when residents were tired of their mail being accidentally delivered to Greersburg, PA and decided to rename the town after their Mayor at the time, S. P. Darlington.
