Beaver Running Store

One of the great things about living in Beaver is the fact that there are more than enough streets to run on without the danger of fast-moving traffic. A great day for me usually consists of putting my running shoes on and heading out. From there who knows, but just about every run consists of a lap of 3rd street and River Road.

Speaking of 3rd Street, since 2010 the main street of Beaver has been home to one of the best running shops in Beaver County. Lloyds The Running Store has everything a runner is looking for, no matter what level you run at. It doesn’t matter if you run a 7-minute mile or a 14-minute mile, there’s something for you at Lloyds.

As the name of the store suggests, it was started and is still run by the one and only Lloyd. Lloyd started running races in 1976 and is still very active in the racing world today. Over his career he’s run thousands of races, with his longest (not official) run being a 50K, which equates out to about 31.1 miles! His longest official race is the marathon, a length of race Lloyd is very fond of. This experience gives Lloyd the perfect background to start a running store that has everything you need to get out and run. From apparel to nutrition, if you need it for running, Lloyds will have it.

Lloyds Run Shop

Starting with shoes, Lloyds carries Asics, Saucony, Mizuno, North Face, and Nike so there’s always a brand that will fit you perfectly. Overall, Lloyds carries over 100 different models of shoes for men, women, and children. If you ask Lloyd what most people ignore when running he’ll tell you it’s usually socks. The wrong pair of socks can let you bruise your toes, get blisters, or even lose a toenail! Lloyds carries a variety of socks but he recommends the Balega brand over most of them.

Along with shoes and socks, you’ll find a variety of apparel at Lloyds including the basic shorts and water-wicking shirts as well as compression garments and just about anything else you can think of wearing. Personally, I go for compression sleeves and a tech shirt and I run in shorts no matter how hot or cold it gets.

Moving past the more traditional apparel, Lloyds carries all the bags, pockets, and carry cases you could need for your keys, wallet, or mobile phone so you always have them close at hand when running. When you’re running with a phone, keeping it secure and safe is a big deal, and there’s a few choices at Lloyds for just this.

Speaking of electronics, Lloyds also carries a variety of fitness electronics from the likes of Nike and Timex so you can record your runs and see what you’re doing while out on the trail or road. Personally speaking, I can’t run without a GPS watch. It helps me keep my pace and makes sure I don’t run too fast and tire out too easily.

If you’re more than a light jogger, you can probably benefit from proper running nutrition. Long distances and high speeds drain you of sugars, carbs, and electrolytes and without replacing them properly you’ll crash and overall just not enjoy your run as much as you should. Lloyds not only carries a variety of nutrition products, but Lloyd as well as his staff are well versed in their use, making sure you get exactly what you need.

Finally, when you’re done with your run and it’s time to rest and recoup, Lloyds has a variety of therapeutic devices to ease your muscles and heal up quickly for your next run. For me, it’s all about ice packs and a good therapeutic roller to make my muscles 100% again.

Lloyds Running Store

More Than a Store

While all these products are great, Lloyds really shines with their knowledge and service. Unlike your typical shoe store, instead of picking the shoe and looking for a size, you can (and should) have Lloyd and his staff choose the best shoe for you based on how your body is built and what you plan to use the shoes for. This custom fitting helps you get the right shoe for you, something many shops just can’t do.

Lloyd is a wealth of running knowledge too. If you’re having an issue with your running, go ask him. He’ll not only tell you what’s causing the issue, but what you can do to fix it quickly. Interestingly enough, most of his suggestions to me have not included a product he sells. This goes to show they are all about making you the best runner possible, whether it’s by selling you something or not.

Insider Tip: Make sure to bring your old running shoes in with you when getting fitted. Lloyd and his team can look at the wear patterns and somehow know exactly what you need in a new shoe. It’s almost scary how accurate they are with this!

Join the Running Club

Looking for some motivation to get you running, or just want some friends that love to run too? Lloyds has an answer for this, too! Every Tuesday at 6pm Lloyd takes a group of runners on a tour of Beaver and surrounding roads as part of the Lloyds Running Club. It’s free to join and when it gets cold or extra hot, you may just need that extra motivation to get out and run.

Overall, Lloyds is the perfect place to go if you love running or even if you’re looking to get started and don’t know how. Their staff will take you from the couch and get you running in no time, and best of all, you’ll be doing it the right way, which means less injuries and more fun.
