It’s officially that time of the year. Winter has started to bury its ugly face, baseball home openers are right around the corner, and most importantly, Beaver County fish fry season is upon us.

The Lenten Fish Fry

I can’t speak for the rest of the country, but in Beaver County and the surrounding Pittsburgh area, a good fish fry during Lent is NOT something hard to come by. They’re easy to find and the list goes on forever.

During Lent, along with the regular bars and restaurants that serve fish, a large number of churches, fire halls, and social clubs are also pumping out superior fish dinners at an alarming rate.

And just like any other food favorite in this county, we’ll certainly argue who has the best until we’re red in the face.

It’s a Family Affair

When it comes to my favorite fish fry, it’s easy as 1-2-3. Because as far back as I can remember, my family and I have been going to the Aliquippa Croatian Center (also referred to as the Croatian Club) for their fish fry during Lent.

And now it’s time for me to pass the torch to my little one. “Can you smell that? It’s the smell of fried fish on a Friday…It smells like Victory!”

The Croatian Center Fish Fry

There is nothing too fancy about the Croatian Club, and it falls into the category of so many other social clubs that open their doors to the public on special occasions.

As you make your way through the double doors, you enter the cathedral of fish fries. Take-out orders to your right, eat-in to your left. It’s that simple.

The fish at the Croatian Club is very popular, and for good reason, so don’t be surprised if the take-out area looks like the DMV.

Battered and Fried or Baked?

You’ll have a few options for your dinner. The 8-ounce batter-dipped piece of cod is heavenly and the obvious favorite among the masses. I personally prefer battered fish to breaded fish, so I definitely don’t need to be sold on this one. It’s fried to absolute perfection and also available as a fish sandwich or a fish salad.

The healthier option to this heroic slab of cod is a baked version that is equally delicious. The road less traveled for myself.

What Sides Do You Want?

Sides at any fish fry are a big deal. The Croatian Club has the timeless comfort food favorites we all know and love.

You’re able to pick from Mac & Cheese, French Fries, Haluski, and Cole Slaw…plus a few others. For me, nothing keeps my fish company quite like Mac & Cheese and some French Fries.

Along with having the best fish around (opinion noted), the Croatian Club offers fried shrimp and scallops that can be ordered ala carte or in a seafood dinner. With the seafood dinner you’ll get a nice variety with a 4-ounce piece of fried fish, shrimp, and scallops.
