During the first few months that Your Beaver County has been around, The Ball Joint has been, by far, the most requested place for us to cover. It seems like almost every day someone is emailing the site or messaging us on Facebook telling us that we have to check out this balls place in Beaver Falls.
With all of the nice things that literally EVERYONE had to say about this place, I knew that I was going to have to get there eventually. However, I was also worried that all the people talking it up might create lofty expectations that would unfairly influence my first impression.
Not to worry. On my first trip to The Ball Joint I was absolutely blown away.
What’s With These Balls?
The Ball Joint is a restaurant where everything is based around different types of meatballs. They serve four different types of meatballs that you can order individually, dipped in a number of different sauces (kind of like chicken wings), or you can get one of their popular meatball subs which include options like the Signature Italian Meatball Sub, the Chicken Bacon Amazing Sub, or the Grilled Shish Kaball Sub.
In addition to balls, the menu also features fresh-cut french fries with a ridiculous collection of toppings to choose from, as well as Rustic Garlic Toast, mac and cheese, corn chowder, and other pasta dishes.
For the first time baller, the menu can seem a little overwhelming. There are quite a few options, and almost every one of them can be customized in just about any way you like. I overheard owner Bryan Fyock describing his menu as a box of legos that lets you build out your meal in any way that you please.
Who is this Ball Guy?
Bryan Fyock first caught my attention because he seems to always be posting very thoughtful compliments of other restaurants in the different discussions on the Your Beaver County Facebook page. After seeing his name and picture next to a few really nice comments, I clicked through to his profile and found out that he was the owner of this balls place that everyone kept talking about.
When my wife and I visited The Ball Joint for the first time, I let Bryan know that we would be coming and he made it a point to be there waiting for us when we arrived. What followed was some of the best food we’ve ever had and a level of service from the guy in charge that made us both feel like royalty.
Our First Ball Joint Experience
When we first arrived at The Ball Joint, Bryan explained to us that the concept was for a “fast casual” restaurant, similar to Chipotle, where you order and pay at the counter and then take a number and your food is brought to your table.
Before we even placed our order, we were treated to samples of their Corn Chowdah and the four most popular combinations of toppings for their fresh-cut french fries. As I expected, the Cheesy Bacon Amazing Fries were my favorite. I was delighted to discover that there were multiple levels of cheesy deliciousness, and that the ranch dressing I was dipping them in was obviously homemade.
It was now time for our actual order, and we wanted to try everything. I ordered two of each of the four meatballs available and we also ordered two subs. To say that the food blew me away would be an understatement, but there were two aspect of this meal that stood out above everything else.
The first thing that really stood out was that everything was clearly made from scratch. The sauces on each of the balls simply had too much unique flavor for me to believe otherwise. Bryan and his team have obviously spent an enormous amount of time perfecting each of their recipes, and it shows!
The second standout aspect was that there was clearly a high level of attention to even the simplest details in every dish we were served. While this might be a “fast casual” restaurant, the presentation of the food was on par with a fine dining establishment. If you scroll up and down looking at the pictures from our meal, I’m sure you will agree.
Did We Get VIP Treatment?
Absolutely. Since the entire Ball Joint staff knew that we were representing Your Beaver County and would be writing a piece on their restaurant, they all went above and beyond to make sure that our experience was perfect. My concern was that maybe our experience didn’t represent a normal visit to The Ball Joint.
In order to make sure that the experience would be the same for anyone walking into the restaurant, I went back for lunch a few days later and received another fabulous meal. You will too.
Getting to The Ball Joint
The Ball Joint is located at 3422 4th Avenue in Beaver Falls just past Geneva College. If you are looking for it, you can’t help but notice the large signs that are located on the building. They open at 11:00 am everyday and close at 8:00 pm every night, except Sunday when they close at 5:00 pm.
You can also order delivery from The Ball Joint if you are hanging out at Beaver Brewing, and they recently announced that they will be serving school lunches at Beaver County Christian School.
As we left The Ball Joint after our first experience, my wife and I joked about how we weren’t exactly sure that we were going to like this place and couldn’t imagine actually getting full from a meal of just meatballs. We had both planted our feet firmly in our mouths on this one, because not only did The Ball Joint live up to the hype, it exceeded those high expectations by a mile….and we were stuffed. If you haven’t been there yet, you can’t imagine what you are missing!
