august-holidays

Here we are, winding down Summer ’15 already! Where did the time go!?? Hopefully the weather stays warm for a few more months to compensate the ridiculously wet and miserable May and June we had.

This month gives us a bunch of awesome reasons to celebrate! Let’s all rejoice and click the ol’ heels together for the first day of school! Woot!

It is also ‘Admit You Are Happy’ month! As the old saying goes, the beatings will continue until morale improves. I’d suggest you smile and make it snappy.

Here are a few good reasons to get you started with your happiness quest!

August 1: National Mustard Day

So many ways to celebrate mustard day, but they all should probably include an outdoor grill and tubular meat! Hot dogs! Kielbasa! Brats! All fantastic with mustard!!

Grab the homemade kielbasa at Blackhawk Specialty Foods, located at 302 Blackhawk Road, very close to The 19th Hole. If you haven’t tried their food, make it a point to check them out. You won’t be disappointed!

Slap those suckers on the grill and enjoy the sunny day (if you think it, it will happen right??).

August 6: National Rootbeer Float Day

YUM, a root beer float on a hot summer day! Can it get much better?!

Grandpa Joe’s has probably the most delicious root beer on tap in the county. It is smooth, thick and delicious! Grab a large cup and by the time you hit Witch Flavor? you should have drank just enough of it to fit a scoop of their vanilla (pace yourself!). And, tada! A float!!

OR, if you want to get really crazy, get a scoop of the Black Cow ice cream – its vanilla with swirls of root beer. mind blown

August 7: National IPA Day

Stay tuned for an article from Andy on this! He is the YBC IPA guy (Sorry, Corey)!

August 8: National Hangover Day

So you celebrated National IPA Day a little too hard and now you’re in a baad way. What to do?!

Well, I am no doctor, but I have had my share of awful mornings back when I was fun and baby free, and I can say without hesitation that you need to eat to soak up some of that awfulness.

The only suggestion I have is a great big Hot Dog Shoppe breakfast. French toast, eggs or pancakes.. whichever you decide, the key to feeling better lies in the sides. Home fries smothered with chili. Yes, it’s a thing and yes, it is fabulous.

You will eat this bowl of feel-better and will be running around like a new person before you know it! Give it a try and let me know how it works for you.

August 8: National Zucchini Day

Any of you with a garden will probably agree with me when I say that there is no more room this summer to celebrate zucchini. It was quaint at first, the hoards of squash coming from the plants…

But now, there are 7 piled up on your kitchen counter, an additional 13 almost ready to pick and what else could you possibly do with them?!?

Our favorite is using a spiralizer to make noodles of them, or cutting them into thin slices and making zucchini pizza!

Zucchini bread, zucchini cake, heck you can even make a Pims Cup from Zucchini! You can scoop out the insides and make it a vessel for a good stuffin, like quinoa and black beans or pizza sauce and cheese.

They shred nicely as a filler in meatloaf or meatballs of any sort – chicken, beef, turkey.. You name it, the zucchini is pretty versatile. You just need to get creative!

When all else fails, start sneaking them onto your neighbors porch. The zucchini fairy strikes again!

August 9: Andy’s Birthday

Possible gift ideas include IPAs and French fries.

August 10: Lazy Day and S’mores Day

These are two separate holidays, but they kind of flow together nicely, right??

We all know how to be lazy, that one probably doesn’t need any further explanation. But how can you be lazy and deal with making s’mores?

First you have to find sticks for the mallows, and light a fire.. that’s a lot of work. How about a vat of s’more’s dippin love instead?

Grab yourself an oven proof vessel – it could be a cast iron skillet, or a metal bake pan – it doesn’t really matter. Just make it on the smaller side! Dump a bag of chocolate chips on the bottom of it, and then cover those chips with a bag of marshmallows.

Stick that thing in a 450* oven until the mallows get good and oozey – Covered for two minutes, uncovered until toasty and brown, probably another two minutes.

All you need now is a box of graham crackers and a can-do attitude! Dunk, dunk, dunk your way to lazy s’mores happiness!

August 19: National Aviation Day

This would be a great day to take a quick drive to the Beaver County Airport in Chippewa to check out the Air Heritage Museum! Andy wrote a great article about it last September.

It is a great spot to check out even if you don’t have any real interest in aviation. The planes on display are really cool. The best part too is that it is free to get in! Take the fam and have a great time!

Aug 20: National Bacon Lovers Day

Oh, bacon. Bacon, bacon, bacon. Bacon is the best, right??

This is the second month in a row we are able to celebrate this delicious salty creation! Last month we had flitch day. This month is just a celebration of all things bacon.

There are so many awesome places in the county to enjoy this holiday. Bacon burgers, BLTs, a side of bacon, bacon gum (Grandpa Joe’s actually has an entire fun bacon section)…

augA friend of mine showed the Mister and I his favorite sandwich with bacon. Start with hollowing out an entire loaf of Italian bread. Mancini’s, of course. Then, in the bread boat, stuff an entire jar of grape jelly and a pound of bacon. Seriously folks, don’t knock it till you try it!

Hopefully you will celebrate all month long again with these fun holidays! I can’t wait to see what September has in store!! I have a feeling Fall beer and all things pumpkin will be making the list. I’m giddie with excitement!!
